Driving on a new driveway too early is the most common cause of premature cracking, so keep cars off for the full week even if the surface looks ready. Melbourne’s weather affects the timeline too, cold, wet winters slow curing, while hot summer days need careful moisture control to prevent surface cracking. We give you exact timings for your specific pour and finish at handover.
For the driveway within your property boundary, usually no. The crossover, the section connecting your driveway to the road across the footpath and nature strip, always requires a vehicle crossing permit from your local council and every Melbourne council has its own specifications for width, gradient and drainage. Some councils also require an asset protection permit before work starts. We manage the permit process as part of your project, so your crossover is built to council spec and passes inspection the first time.
A residential concrete driveway in Melbourne should be at least 100mm thick with steel reinforcement mesh, sitting on a properly compacted base. Thickness is only half the story: poor base preparation causes more driveway failures than thin concrete, which is why we never pour over uncompacted fill or reactive soil without addressing it first.
Hairline cracking is a natural property of concrete as it shrinks during curing, which is exactly why control joints exist. Properly placed control joints direct that movement into neat, deliberate lines instead of random surface cracks. Structural cracking is different: it’s almost always caused by poor base compaction, missing reinforcement, tree roots, or Melbourne’s reactive clay soils moving with moisture changes. Good site preparation, correct slab thickness, steel mesh and well planned joints prevent the vast majority of it.
Concrete is the stronger all rounder for driveways: it’s a single reinforced slab, so there’s no individual unit sinking, no weeds between joints and less ongoing maintenance. Pavers win on repairability, a stained or cracked paver can be swapped individually and some homeowners prefer their look. For patios and paths, it’s largely a style and budget decision; for surfaces carrying vehicles, a reinforced concrete slab on a compacted base generally outlasts paving. Sometimes, but it’s rarely the best option. Overlaying only works if the existing slab is structurally sound, stable and correctly prepared and it raises surface levels, which creates problems at garage entries, door thresholds and drainage points. If the old concrete is cracked or sinking, those faults usually telegraph through into the new layer within a few years. In most cases, removing the old slab and pouring fresh on a properly compacted base delivers a far better long term result and we’ll tell you honestly which situation yours is after a site inspection.
Concrete is one of the lowest maintenance outdoor surfaces there is: sweep regularly, wash occasionally with a hose or mild detergent and clean oil or leaf stains promptly before they set into the surface. Sealed finishes like exposed aggregate should be resealed roughly every [2–4 years] to keep their colour and stain resistance, we’ll confirm the right interval for your finish at handover. Avoid harsh acid cleaners and de icing salts, which can damage the surface layer.
